WE LOVE YOUR QUESTIONS!
We often get lots of questions before every puppy goes to their new home. See below to find many of our answers. Don't see the answer you need? ASK US! Though we don't consider ourselves experts, we just like to share what we have experienced. Be sure to do lots of research before making your decisions!
- CAN A STANDARD POODLE THRIVE IN AN APARTMENT?
- Some may disagree with me, but I say... YES! Absolutely! The space in your home is not the problem. It's making sure that your pup has adequate space to call his own, a door to exit/enter and a good place to potty outside. However, it's critical that your pup gets plenty of exercise and plenty of brain stimulation. Do you have space outside to play fetch? Can you take him for a walk or run everyday? Do you plan to teach him tricks and give him several 'jobs' to accomplish for you. Give him a task and he'll be a happy addition to your family!
- CAN A STANDARD POODLE HUNT?
- This is one of those questions that I find a little funny. There's a long lasting stigma that is attached to poodles and them being just a 'fru-fru' dog that 'looks pretty'. Some guys are totally embarrassed at the thought of owning a standard poodle! Yikes!! The first concern my husband had before we got our very first standard poodle was the way they look! That's the best part, you can groom them how you want and YES train them to hunt! They can be trained to hunt whatever you desire! Poodles love a good task and if they are trained from early on, you'll find that they are absolutely excellent candidates for hunting. Be consistent and start early and it won't take long!
- WILL MY POODLE BE POTTY TRAINED WHEN HE/SHE COMES HOME?
- That depends on YOU! We strive to pre-potty train all of our puppies before they come home to you. That means that we take them outside regularly and help them get the idea that we don't want them potty-ing in the house. We clean up after them, so they are used to being in a clean area. However, every dog needs to know YOUR HOME when they arrive. Puppies younger than 16 weeks are still trying to learn how to control their bladders. No matter what pre-training they've had, YOU will need to complete their training. We suggest the following:
- CHOOSE which door they will exit and enter for pottying. Make it the same door each time.
- USE THE PHRASE: "You want to go potty, or GO potty, or Outside, Potty" and always repeat that at the door that you're exiting.
- Keep them on a leash, in a crate or in a small confined area with you at ALL TIMES until they are completely potty-trained.
- Take them out every few hours or less. Use the same door and repeat the same phrases.
- Praise them when they go potty! 'Good potty!!'
- Be CONSISTENT!

No matter what pre-training they've had, YOU will need to complete their training. We suggest the following:
- CAN MY POODLE LEARN TO POTTY IN ONE PLACE OUTSIDE?
- Yes!! This takes consistent training and you have to go out with them EVERY TIME until they start to get the idea. It can be done and it's a really good reward afterwards! Teach them to potty on command and you'll find this useful for the rest of your companionship! Be consistent and start early! We suggest you DECIDE this BEFORE BRINGING puppy home!
- CAN YOU TRAIN MY PUPPY FOR ME FOR A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THEY COME HOME?
- We love to do this when we can! This is based on an individual basis depending on how many pups we have at the time. We have raised up pups until they are 16-17 weeks old, which is an excellent time to bring them home and get them straight into their new life, filled with love and training with you!
- HOW MUCH EXERCISE DOES A STANDARD POODLE NEED?
- Standards are a large breed and some form of daily exercise is a WONDERFUL thing. They do well with fetch, or going for a walk or run. But, they are also not a 'hyper' or 'high-energy' dog. They are not spastic and love time with their family. They can do great with a simple short walk each day as long as they also have plenty of 'brain-stimulation' or mind activities. They are smart and LOVE to have a job! Teach them to retrieve the newspaper, turn on the lights, sit and wait at the door, wait for their food. Teach them tricks and take him for a walk and you have a great combination of physical and exercise.
- HOW MUCH DOES IT COST FOR THE UPKEEP OF OWNING A STANDARD POODLE?
- This varies and is based on your preferences for your poodle. Finding a good groomer that gives the cut you like will cost anywhere between $40-$100 per groom. You should expect them to also clip nails, trim ears and paws and they'll come home perfectly soft and ready to cuddle! If you invest in a nice pair of clippers and want to give it a go yourself, it's really fabulous bonding time!! You'd be surprised! Depending on the type of cut that you like, the time between grooms is usually around 4-8 weeks. We like to keep our poodles hair generally short so we can take them to the mountains and not worry about so many burrs or weeds in their coat! But, isn't that the beauty of a standard poodle? NO SHEDDING AND THE SOFTEST, SWEETEST, companion with whatever style YOU LOVE!
- WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TOY POODLE AND A STANDARD POODLE?
- I have never owned a toy poodle. They are small and I wouldn't want to step on them! I know of some that have owned them and their temperaments seem like a completely different breed because of their size. Poodles are all very intelligent dogs. All need training and brain-activities. But, I can only tell you how amazing it is to have a standard. Did I mention, amazing!!! Non-yappy, happy, loyal, smart, service oriented, non-hyper, non-shedding. Poodles love their people. They are charming and pleasant to be around. They are not food-beggars. They are content doing whatever you are doing and their loyalty keeps them right there with you.... Males tend to be a little more cuddly than females. Train them up right and you'll be so glad to have them in your life!
- DO YOU DO HEALTH TESTING ON YOUR POODLES?
- Yes. We do feel it is important to test for common problems found in standard poodles, but we've also found that it's not worth testing for EVERY little thing. Our vet suggested we test for what a vet sees most. We focus on hips, thyroid and eyes, heart, vwb's, NE, DM. If they show ANY indication that they shouldn't be bred, we won't breed them. We strive for healthy puppies and carefully consider this. We look at pedigrees and for any problems in sibling or their parents.
- HOW MUCH DOES A POODLE COST?
- The cost of a standard poodle puppy around 8 weeks old is generally between $1500-$2200 depending on colors and lines. We do a lot with our pups before they go home and we offer a lifetime of support as well as a two year genetic health guarantee.
- HOW BIG OF A CRATE WILL MY STANDARD POODLE NEED WHEN HE/SHE IS FULL GROWN?
- Our full grown standards are happy with crates that are around 48"x24" or 48"x30" or 48"x36". However, when they are a puppy, they should have a smaller crate that is not too large that gives them the idea that they can potty in one spot, and sleep in the other. The best is the kind that can change size as they grow.
- I AM INTERESTED IN BREEDING. DO YOU SELL YOUR PUPPIES WITH FULL RIGHTS?
- That's GREAT! Talk to me! I can completely understand your interest! We have found breeding to be a wonderful hobby and I'm simply passionate about being able to carefully consider which dam and sire to mate and bringing beautiful puppies into the world. I love meeting all the wonderful families that the puppies go home to and getting to watch the pups grow attached to them.
It's an awesome experience, overall. But, it's definitely not for everyone. If you have never had a litter of puppies, it's easy to not consider many aspects that go into it. The miscellaneous and sometimes massive unexpected messes that occur, the late nights up helping with delivering, the possibility of having to rush to a vet in the middle of a night if complications arise, the stress that your dam will be under and being able to create a safe, comfortable environment for her, and especially when a stillborn puppy arrives...it can be a lot more than you realize.
Some may think that breeding must be a great way to earn a lot of money because, well look at how much the puppies cost!! But, think again! If you have never had a litter of standard poodle puppies, you may also be really surprised to find out that it's not as big of a money-maker as you might think. We have had litters where we ended up paying more for the litter than we made! (That was a litter of EIGHT puppies!!!) While we try to carefully consider the balance of our time and this hobby, it is an expensive business. There are many supplies and costs that go into it and we are striving to more carefully consider these expenses so that we can continue providing amazing puppies for your family.
So, as far as selling breeding rights, we do from time to time include this with a puppy. Our puppies are registered with AKC & some AKC & UKC. That alone can get really expensive.

- DO YOU HAVE A TRAINER THAT YOU LIKE?
- We love using Jan Perkins with Live Oak Dog Obedience Utah. She's been a wonderful trainer and we take our big dogs to her as much as possible. I will provide one class with Jan for ANY dog that is purchased from me.
- WHAT SUPPLIES SHOULD I GET FOR MY DOG?
- I love this question! Oh, wait...I love all questions! I've prepared a 'Shopping List' that can help you figure out what you'll need for your new companion! You can choose what fits your situation and shop around. Don't feel like you have to do it only this way! Here's a link to a FILE. I can email this if you have any trouble with the file.
- WHAT'S A #POODLEDOODLE?
- Great Question! Many people will call and describe a dog that they're looking for. They want calm, but playful... not hyper. low to non-shedding, smart, easy to train, loyal, a retriever, a swimmer, one that will want to camp or hike or possibly even hunt. And they 'heard' their neighbor got the CUTEST little puppy, with the most adorable, scruffy face! Oh, they'll tell me..."it was a goldendoodle, or a labradoodle, or even a ... bernedoodle, or a aussiedoodle or some kind of amazing new doodle that surely is the best new dog out there! So, they want one like those! Because ... SOOOO CUTE!!!! But, the truth is: What they really want, is a dog that has a more consistent temperament, one that repeatedly and consistently offers amazing service for clients, AND IS SOOOO CUTE!!!! They want one that does NOT SHED (no really people: doodle mixes (with a shedding breed to a non-shedding breed) ARE NOT THE SAME as a purebred poodle that doesn't shed.) What you'd be getting from that mix is a dog that may shed AND has to be groomed regularly. What they often don't know is how inconsistent a doodle can be. Some have CRAZY temperament problems, like severe anxiety (even when properly socialized), pups in the same litter all over the temperament spectrum from overly dominant to overly submissive and fearful, drooling, mouthing issues, other health issues, severe issues on the grooming table because... well Labradors don't get shaved down on a grooming table! Ever! The list could go on and on.... However, it doesn't mean that poodles don't ever have problems, ALL BREEDS DO. But what it does mean is that a well-bred poodle that has problems that are genetically passed down, should not be bred. JUST LIKE ALL BREEDS. It doesn't mean that you CAN'T find a great goldendoodle that fits your needs and turns out to be a fantastic pup with none of those problems. But, the point is: It's inconsistent. It's hit and miss. It also means that a well-bred poodle is more likely to be the consistent, amazing companion that you want. It's a #PooodleDoodle = a Poodle with a Doodle haircut! That's the only difference, except you're getting a much more predictable dog that you'll be so grateful for.

SO YOU WANT A DOG, HUH?!
Owning a dog should be a special and rewarding experience. If you've never owned a dog before, you'll want to prepare yourself by doing plenty of research and understand the commitments involved. If you've never owned a poodle, you'll want to also do your research and understand the differences between them and shedding dogs. If you've been there and done that, then you'll know why we love breeding dogs! Be READY for your new family member! You can find many resources on the internet about owning a dog. One we would suggest is AKC's description about owning a poodle. ![]() TRAINING YOUR DOG
In order to make owning a dog a wonderful experience, you'll want to start preparing for training BEFORE your canine family member enters your home for the first time. Dogs need to be trained with clear expectations. The best way to make sure this happens is to prepare those who will be working with the dog, so that the dog has consistent interactions with humans. A little preparation will go a long way - even if it is just making a list of the commands you will use with your dog and posting it on the fridge. When a dog is trained, he/she will be an even more wonderful addition to your family. Again, there are many great resources on the internet and great books about training poodles. Not all breeds learn in the same way, so it's a good idea to make sure your resources are specific. For those in Utah that want a good trainer that holds classes, we recommend Jan Perkins with Utah Live Oak Obedience. WAITING LIST & DEPOSIT Deposits are $300 and are refundable up until five days after the puppies are born. When they are born, if you aren't able to get the color/gender that you are seeking, your deposit will be refunded or put towards a puppy in the next litter (your choice). Again, any deposits not refunded by 5 days after the puppies are born become NON-REFUNDABLE. Buyers will choose puppies based on the order of deposits received. PAYMENTS ACCEPTED Apple Pay Paypal - 3% fee applies Cash Cashiers check Venmo Square Cash Wire Transfer from Bank to Bank Facebook Pay WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PERSONAL CHECKS HEALTHY PUP PROMISE We strive to provide the healthiest pup from our home to yours. We will make sure they have the appropriate shots by the time they come to your new home. We understand that having confidence in a pup's health is important. New puppy owners have three business days to have their own checkup by a veterinarian to make sure they feel confident in their pup's health after bringing him/her home. If the vet discovers a health issue in your pup, send us a copy of the medical records and veterinarian signature within three business days. If the condition occurred prior to your purchase of the puppy, we are happy to make a full refund when the puppy is returned. We cannot, of course, take responsibility for neglect of any kind on the part of the buyer. We offer a 2-year genetic guarantee on most of our pups. If a pup is found to have a genetic health problem within the first year, the puppy can be returned and a new puppy from a future litter will be given. There will be no refunds after the initial vet check (within 3 business days). PUPPY FLIGHTS We have found a lot of success with flying a puppy at our feet in the cabin of a plane. Your pup can ride comfortably in a new mesh carrier and are with someone THE ENTIRE FLIGHT, not in cargo. This has proven to be the LEAST stressful option for getting pup to you if you live thousands of miles away. If you need your puppy flown to you, there are several airlines that have pet-transportation options available and we will help find the best option. The cost for this varies based on where you live, and usually ranges between $300-$600. DELIVERY Not interested in sending your puppy on an airplane? We can offer delivery during most seasons. The delivery fee will be calculated based on your distance from us. In most states neighboring Utah this would be comparable to or less than shipping by air. This option has the added advantage of your pet traveling in a less-stressful environment with someone they know well. |
WHELPING
We are fascinated with all kinds of dogs, but have put our focus into Poodles. We believe in whelping indoors where we can control sanitation a little easier. We remove dew claws, have their tails docked (unless natural tails are desired), take them to the Veterinarian to administer the necessary puppy shots and most importantly allow the mother to be their main care-taker until they are ready to venture out on their own. Puppies do not go to their new homes before they are 8 weeks old. ![]() PUPPY SOCIALIZATION & TRAINING We keep our puppies well socialized and training begins at an early age. By breeding at home, we feel that we can create a more healthy environment where our pups are socialized in a happy house and yard environment where they begin learning how to be positive contributions to society. We believe in training our dogs and treating them with respect. A well-trained dog is a happy dog and knows what is expected of him/her. All of our puppies begin crate & potty training before they are 8 weeks old. READY FOR A PUPPY? We are thrilled for you! Please fill out the form on the 'Contact Us' page and tell us about yourself and what kind of situation your puppy will be going to. WHAT TO EXPECT Each puppy comes with:
COST Standard Poodles range between $1200-$3000 and vary based on health, temperament, gender, size & color. Full registration varies between $2500-$3500. Please let us know what questions you have. Full registration is not granted very often and is usually for special cases. Talk to us if you're interested in this. A DOGGY CONTRACT? We ask that our buyers sign a contract covering the care of the puppy after the transaction. Our pups are bred with the intent that they'll be a positive addition to the canine and people world.
